SAVE YOUR MARKET

PETITION – WE NEED YOUR URGENT HELP

Harrogate Borough Council is increasing the cost of rent and stall assembly to traders by over 25%. This will mean that it will not be financially viable to continue trading for several market traders.

Other local councils helped market traders who could trade during lockdown providing essential food products. This was through charging no rent or discounting rent. When non-food traders were allowed to return, after not being able to trade for 3 months, full rent was charged despite other local councils providing financial assistance.

This 25% increase is being introduced on 1st August and excludes VAT which is charged by Harrogate Borough Council but not by other councils, most traders are not VAT registered so cannot recover the VAT. This will lead to the loss of more traders from the ancient markets of Knaresborough and Ripon. We are asking for your support to stop this rent increase, please sign now before it is too late.

I’m disgusted that this is happening in these difficult times. Empty shops and no market will be the future if this comes into fruition.

  2. Knaresborough needs the market to keep it thriving and is well known all over an
d keeps the lovely flow of people and locals into the town

Hello. I have signed and shared πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ˜Š. Before I changed jobs if I was free on a Wednesday. I loved coming to the Market. – sadly due to my work rota I never have a Wednesday off any more. (new job).

In your Introduction you do not say why HBC are slapping ☹️ such a big increase onto the traders – Very unfair with Covid 19 etc.

Knaresborough market was part of my childhood growing up. It would such a shame to see it disappear.

  5. Have signed and shared. Having traded briefly on Knaresborough Market, and spent many childhood Wednesdays pottering round it with my mum, I would be heartbroken and disgusted to see the greed of HBC force more traders to stop trading. We need to preserve these traditional links with the past, they are living history!

  6. Sharon Calvert says:

After the campaign to save Knaresborough Market over the past few years with a specialist committee which had Knaresborough Town Councillors on, it is ludicrous for Harrogate Borough Council to increase rents for market stall holders especially whilst we are still in the midst of a pandemic! Many of the market stall holders will have lost so much already. Harrogate Borough Council, remember that Knaresborough has been a ‘Market Town’ for hundreds of years!!

  7. Kathy Allday says:

I am furious at HBC for doing this. Why oh why do they seem determined to put every obstacle in the way of letting our ancient market flourish. Perhaps they are trying to recoup money to make up for the millions they squandered building new offices in Harrogate. They make me sick!

  8. Alwyn Davies says:

What is the point of having a Knaresborough Mayor and Town council if they cannot manage local affairs that impact on the town?
HBC do not appear to have the towns folk of knaresborough in their plans or thoughts for local growth and future prosperity. Do they have too large an area to manage that would benefit from a little devolved leadership?
Get a grip HBC and KTC!!

  9. P Beeson says:

Born and bred in Knaresborough, the market is part of the town’s history and heritage (a much much more historical and ancient place than Harrogate!!!) The market also attracts visitors to the town. It must be valued and encouraged to thrive, not squeezed out of business by increasing rents imposed by Harrogate Borough Council.
